Before I Knew You...
Over the past few years I have spent a lot of my time focusing on a very personal and passionate part of my life, my family. My emotions, thoughts and actions have spilled over, consumed my work and directly affected the outcome of my paintings exhibited here.
This exhibition features a continuous theme inspired by my long and tedious journey to motherhood. It represents a window into my private struggle and shows the viewer how I have been allowed the opportunity to discover myself and grasp my feelings through my own creativity. Each painting, whether on the canvas or applied on my casts, is a direct result of my love, joy, tears, worry and pain for each child in birth and in death.
In addition to my own phenomenal encounters I was fortunate enough to be able to experience and see a small piece of how others may have felt through their own interpretations of these topics. With the aid of photographs, models during the casting process and images of the human form, I was able to capture beautiful moments through my own craft beginning with preconception all the way through child birth. Emotions were felt through both female and male perspective. Everyone sees these events differently; everyone has his or her own story to tell and I wanted to be able to convey these moments through my work.
My medium has changed over the years from a heavy, dark and thick layer of oil paint, to a thinner, brighter and lighter array of watercolor applications. The medium complements the subject matter and together they convey a message of purity which is only second to the innocent nature of my daughters.
I have acquired so much information about myself through this emergent period in my life and it is my hope that each viewer has the opportunity to experience something from my work and appreciate the beauty behind the image. I believe that my thoughts and feelings are appropriately summed up by a quote given by Agatha Christie, “A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity; it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.”
